How to Extract & Make CBD Oil
How to Extract CBD From Hemp or Cannabis?
The cannabinoid is an acronym of cannabidiol compound that is commonly found in Cannabis. it is an extractive process in which cannabis or hemp plants are made to release some CBD-rich products. The purpose of extracting CBD is to allow it to be consumed by humans. In any of the processes for extracting CBD, it is recommended that you use CBD rich plant materials. When it comes to choosing the strains of the plant, it must have the right ratio of THC and CBD. As a health supplement, Cannabinoid is used to offer some relaxation to the body. But how is it made?
Is there a difference between Cannabis and Hemp Plant Cannabinoid?
Extraction of Cannabinoid from either cannabis (medical marijuana) or Hemp plant is possible. From whichever source it is extracted, some differences are likely to be noticed. The most notable and important difference will be the quantity of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)) and Cannabinoid found in the end product. Cannabinoid originating from cannabis has high levels of Cannabinoid with minimal levels of THC while that emanating from the Hemp plant has more tetrahydrocannabinol than Cannabinoid. The cannabinoid molecule extracted from either hemp or cannabis is the same.
The “entourage effect”, considered as a very important part of cannabis, is the collaboration of the various components within the plant. Products that contain all components of the plant are called whole-plant extract. Whole-plant extracts are considered to be more beneficial than CBD isolate extracts because with CBD isolate, you can only take advantage of the benefits of CBD alone while you can take advantage of the benefits of every component, including CBD, in using the whole-plant extract. With the hemp plant and cannabis plant, the latter is known to have a higher amount of terpene and CBD compared to the hemp plant. In that case, using a hemp plant in the extraction requires more plant material making your product unrefined.
Methods for Extracting CBD to Make CBD Oil
DISCLAIMER: We are not advising this unless you are either a professional or are supervised by a chemical. We are explaining the process used in making CBD oil, but advise that you should consult a professional regarding the use of these methods.
Mainly, there are three methods used in the extraction of Cannabinoids from either hemp plant or cannabis. They include; The CO2 extraction, the ethanol extraction, and the oil method.
CO2 CBD Extraction
This method uses high pressurized carbon dioxide at very low temperatures to ensure that a very pure form of Cannabinoids is extracted. The high pressure coupled with low temperatures helps in making the CO2 “supercritical” since it has both gas and liquid properties. The supercritical fluid acts as a non-toxic solvent that when added to hemp, it liberates any hidden phytonutrients. The low temperatures are to ensure that no heat sensitive vitamin or enzymes are destroyed. The high pressure ensures that there are isolation and preservation to guarantee the purity of the product. The pressure ensures that substances such as chlorophyll and residue are completely removed since some of the neurotoxic solvents may affect the immune system if not removed. The CO2 is finally released, and a very concentrated pure extract is left. This method is sustainable and safe and uses very sophisticated equipment to compress the CO2.
When CO2 is turned to its solid state, it is what we call dry ice. CO2 can easily be turned into its solid state with the right temperature and pressure. Turning CO2 gas to its liquid state requires you to increase the pressure to more than 75 psi while bringing the temperature below -56 degrees Celsius at the same time. When you have successfully brought it to this point, you may now begin the extraction of CBD.
Ethanol CBD Extraction
The ethanol method can use high grain alcohol to make high-quality CBD. This oil is appropriate for use in vape pen cartridges. This method harms some useful natural oils. Ethanol extracts the chlorophyll making the end product to have an unpleasing taste and color. The chlorophyll can be eliminated through filtration, but this step results in the removal of Cannabinoid, making the oil less potent.
Once ethanol is poured in the plant material, the flavor, CBD and a bit of the green color are separated from the plant. When the right amount of CBD is gathered, the liquid is then brought to evaporation through heating which will result in the base CBD oil.
CBD olive Oil Extraction
Olive oil can be used in the extraction of Cannabinoid. Olive oil is used as a carrier oil in the extraction process. The method had gained a lot of popularity associated with the additional nutritional benefits inherent in the extraction. This method is considered safe and does not result in any unwanted residues. The only good aspect of this method is that it is a very simple process that only requires heating up the oil and simply filtering the extract.
At the beginning of the process, the plant material should have decarboxylation, which is a process of heating or toasting the plant material to approximately 115 degrees Celsius and heating should take place for about 40 minutes. When the plant material has been decarboxylated, combine the olive oil and the plant material and heat it up to 100 degrees Celsius for about 1 – 2 hours. After the process, you have your extracted CBD oil.

Clearly, extracting Cannabinoids from Hemp or cannabis is possible from any of the already discussed methods. Therefore, the onus primarily rests on the consumer to determine how to extract it. Do you need a concentrated CBD or are you looking for the cheaper and simpler option? If you answer this, you will find the appropriate method
